The other day on the holiday playlist at work, Eartha Kitt’s song Santa, Baby started to play. It’s my favorite song and I adore it for being unapologetically naughty and fun! You just have to watch the video below; it’s absolutely divine!
That little song put me inspired me to mix a little Christmas naughtiness with my nice.
I just imagine dear, sweet Eartha decorating for the holidays by mixing in a few personal items in with the decor to make it moody and seductive. You know, a feather boa here, an ornament there; a lipstick-stained champagne glass here, while hanging the wreath with cheer; and a touch of holiday sparkle courtesy of her high heels, last year’s Tiffany’s diamond earrings and the Christmas lights. Le Sigh…I feel more glam just writing all of that. It’s about the people bringing all the holiday glitz and perhaps somebody picking up on a few hints (as in, Oh My! A new duplex and checks! How on earth did you guess?)
Anyhoo, whether you have been naughty or nice, I hope your holidays are fun and very, very glam (golddigging optional, wink and sly smile).
And before, getting the day started, I wanted you to be the first to know that after today’s post, I will literally be taking a holiday, to celebrate the season and regroup for the new year. For me one of the highlights of 2009 has been this blog and the people who it visit everyday. I’m so thankful you stop by and, for you, I want Design Wonderland to be bigger, better and more creative in 2010.
Want to decorate you home for the holidays, but want it to be eco-friendly? Take a cue from the Embassy of Copenhagen and some local DC design students from the Corcoran and students from Copenhagen and give yourself a Green Christmas.
Everything was created with recycled materials, including coffee filters, napkins and newpapers, and found objects with oustandingly lovely results. I’m swooning over the papier mache birds and and paper flowers. It reminds me of the decor Spring 2009 Chanel Show.
Of course it’s no coincidence that the recycled decor is timed with the Climate Change Conference ocurring in Copenhagen as we speak. And the hard work and detail yielded gorgeous results.
I thought I’d share a few more images to inspire a weekend’s worth of holiday decorating. All of these images break from the usual reds and greens and show that there are other colorful and unusual ways to be festive.
Lately, It’s been rather busy in Design Wonderland. I’ve picked up some fun freelance work of late and today I’m assisting with a showhouse installation, with a holiday theme. Think Global Glamour!
But when I saw the holiday decor in the home of antiques dealer and designer Edie van Breems , I instantly wanted a whole series of homes to decorate with at least one inspired by her Swedish style. I love the casual elegance and the wheat. It is traditional part of Swedish holiday decor and lends beautiful additional textures to Breem’s neutral color scheme.
For me the holiday season is the only time I don’t mind it being cold outside. The crisp air always makes me ready to cozy up for a fireside chat with hot cocoa or bundle up for a walk around town. This year I hope that walk takes me on tour of the White House. If you haven’t heard Barney’s Creative Director Simon Doonan was tapped to play Santa’s Decorating elf at America’s House. YAY!!!! Is it just me or is DC becoming more and more fun? I love the idea that the White House decor will be fabulously imaginative (and a tad quirky too, I hope).
Watch this video and you will understand immediately why I heart Simon Doonan…
I heart anyone who says stand up and be your own fabulous eccentric self!
But I digress… Let me temper my excitement a bit. After all this post is about Christmas and the holiday season…
Last year Doonan created hippie-inspired Christmas windows for Barney’s. Fun Right? I mean really, who said Chrismas had to be traditional? Here’s a few images:
Want a Hippie inspired Holiday for your own home? I thought I’d share this fabulously fun segment with Doonan on The Martha Stewart Show.
So do you see why I’m super excited? But if you don’t mind, I have got to go. I must try to reach Mrs. O, a member of congress, an elf or Santa himself about getting a White House holiday tour! Luckily I’ve been nice all year…
Let the beauty of what you love be what you do. -Rumi
I’m Jessica and that quote by Rumi are the words by which I live.
With a BA in Art History and a MA in Interior Design, I am armed to create beautiful spaces where ever I go and I am always researching, learning and doing in pursuit of my creative endeavors. Because I needed a place where my design ideas, discoveries, creative whims and inspirations could call home, Design Wonderland was born. Here, in my wonderland, I curate an eclectic mix of all wonderful things that inspire me on a daily basis. Though my first loves have always been art, fashion and design, I am also inspired by my insatiable appetite for good food, good friends, new places, beautiful poetry and lots of tea. My hope is that through sharing my thoughts, you will be inspired to create something beautiful too.
Beauty is all around,
Jessica
